Why you should try treating your skin condition with topical CBD

Your skin is the largest organ in and on your body and one of the most complex. It’s your personal force field against the elements and infection, as well as playing a crucial role in regulating body temperature, immune defense and of course your senses. However, the complexity of our skin means that it can be affected by around 2000+ skin conditions which can leave you sore, miserable and stressed.

Two of the most common problems that can afflict our skin are Eczema, and Psoriasis. Eczema, a condition that affects approximately 30% of people in America, causes itchy flakey blisters on the skin that could be a result of an overreaction of our bodies immune system to various irritants. Psoriasis, another condition linked to the immune system, causes our skin to produce too many cells leading to flaky, sometimes scaly skin that is most commonly found on hands and feet, knees, elbows, scalp, and the lower back. If you have had either one of these conditions you know the pain, frustration and embarrassment that they can cause.

Finding a natural solution

While there are many things you can do to treat the skin during a flare-up, plain lotions and moisturizers are only a stopgap measure on the road to relief.

Other remedies like potent steroid creams if used over a long period of time can cause long term damage to the skin and do not really tackle the root of the problem. Topical CBD has shown great promise in helping to reduce irritation, and act as a source of lasting relief to people suffering from inflammatory skin conditions.

How does it work? here's the science

CBD stands for cannabidiol which is a natural chemical compound (cannabinoid) produced by cannabis flowers and leaves.

The main function of cannabinoids in plants is to provide natural protection to the plant. Cannabinoids are also found in our bodies, these are called endocannabinoids, they provide natural protection to the functions of our bodies - we call the system that controls the flow of compounds around the body the Endocannabinoid System. This beautifully complex system provides protection for us by having our naturally produced endocannabinoids work with our cannabinoid receptors that regulate a variety of our key functions like mood, inflammation, our reproductive system, our immune system and many other things.

Our unique system of cannabinoid receptors

This system is incredibly old, having evolved over 500 million years ago.

Research initially suggested endocannabinoid receptors were only present in the brain and nervous system (CB1 receptors), but scientists later found that the receptors are present throughout the body, including our skin, immune cells, bone, fat tissue, liver, pancreas, skeletal muscle, heart, blood vessels, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract (CB2 receptors).

Topical application of CBD

By rubbing CBD directly into your skin (especially a high potency cream or salve) large amounts of CBD bind to those CB-2 Receptors in our skin.

For people suffering from psoriasis, this helps in two key ways, firstly by enhancing the immune response it can help to slow down the number of skin cells generated by the body, reducing the itchy scaling. Secondly the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD can reduce the inflammation, and soothe pain. CBD works similarly with eczema sufferers by triggering the immune response relieving itching, and in either case serves as a healthier alternative to steroid based creams that are commonly used for these conditions and can have damaging adverse side effects.

Designed for psoriasis sufferers by psoriasis suffers

Our Comfort Cream was created by our founder and psoriasis sufferer of 25 years who intimately knows the pain, anguish and discomfort that skin conditions can bring.

It contains 500mg of pure CBD isolate and delivers a potent dose of CBD with every application. In addition to a high CBD content, Comfort Cream uses a unique blend of natural moisturizers chosen for their ability to be absorbed into the skin easily delivering the CBD into the skin tissue easily and efficiently. The blend of essential oils were mindfully selected for their anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and skin soothing properties and its pleasant scent restores and soothes mind and body. Of course Comfort Cream is not just for sufferers of skin conditions, we call it the workhorse of your bathroom cabinet, why? Because on top of its ability to soothe and condition skin, it can penetrate down into the tissue and muscle beneath the skin helping to alleviate muscle, and joint pain. Some psoriasis sufferers can go on to develop psoriatic arthritis but in some cases the joint problems can begin before skin patches appear. In either case your immune system is responsible for both.

Taking a two pronged approach

CBD topicals perform a critical role in soothing skin disorders, but you are likely to achieve more long lasting results by balancing your whole endocannabinoid system. Stress, anxiety and lack of sleep mean your system is under stress - ultimately this could be contributing to flare ups. CBD ingestible's work to create a state of homeostasis in the body supporting the endocanabinoids in our system that are our of wack and exhibiting themself both mentally and physically. It's likely that the imbalance in the internal system is a contributing factor to how the skin is behaving. Ingesting CBD oil alongside a topical solution takes a holistic approach attacking the cannabinoid receptors both externally and internally.

How to dose for psoriasis?

Dosing for psoriasis like all CBD dosing is highly individual. We have created a dosing sheet with an integration plan to help you get started. We would suggest starting low and slow and using our CBD journal sheets to record your symptoms and your response to the CBD for both the oil and the topical.
